Rheumatology is a specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and management of conditions which affect the bones, joints, muscles and connective (supporting) tissues. This ranges from simple soft-tissue problems to complex multisystem connective tissue disorders and systemic vasculitis.
Dr Ramani Arumugam is a qualified Consultant Rheumatologist who did part of her fellowship training in Bath, United Kingdom. The RNHRD (Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases) is a 300 year old hospital dedicated to rheumatological diseases.
Striving to provide high quality medical care, Dr Ramani works as part of a multidisciplinary team incorporating dedicated musculoskeletal radiologists, physiotherapists, nurses and occupational therapists. She works closely with orthopaedic surgery colleagues and specialists in other areas allied to rheumatology.
She provides a full range of rheumatology services including intra-articular (joint) and soft-tissue injections, intra-venous therapies, immunosuppressive treatments, disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs and the new range of biologic therapies. She has on-site access to all laboratory and imaging modalities including MRI, CT, PET, ultrasound and DEXA (BoneDensitometry).
Dr Ramani has particular clinical focus and interest in the management of axial spondyloarthritis (including ankylosing spondylitis), Gout. Psoriatic arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. She is an International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) certified to read DEXA scans and treat Osteoporosis and did her dissertation in Vitamin D levels in postmenopausal women in Malaysia.
She lectures both locally and internationally to fellow rheumatologists, other subspecialty doctors, primary care doctors and allied health personnel. She was an honorary lecturer in UPM and CUCMS universities whilst in government service.
Writing gives her great pleasure and she has written several articles over the past few years, that have been published in Berita MMA (Malaysian Medical Association) and Arthritis Foundation Malaysia. She was part of the editorial board for the Malaysian Society of Rheumatology book to commemorate 25 years of service in Malaysia in 2014 and was also invited to be part of the editorial board of Hospital Serdang.
Patient education and knowledge to self manage is very important to Dr Ramani. She has created a website www.drramani.co and a FB page Rheumatology Malaysia for patients who would like to find out more information about their disease and the medications used.
